The Runescape Addict

Part 1- Discovering Runescape

It was another hot, sunny day as summer slowly came on to Jimmy Parson’s little town. He was sitting, half asleep, in his history classroom, counting the seconds before the bell marking dismissal would ring. Jimmy was rather young , aged 13 and in the eight grade, with black hair, dark eyes, quite pale skin and was medially built. He was quite intelligent and athletic, but extremely lazy and talkative.
On the verge of falling asleep, the dismissal bell finally rang and he woke with a start. He smiled, wrote down his history homework on Norse runes and quickly walked out of class, passing by his old, short history teacher who he always thought as someone who had no life. Heading out into the school halls, with students anxious to head home passing by, he was joined by his best friend, Mark Anthony, who was a skinny, funny guy with a positive attitude.

“How was rest period?” Mark asked Jimmy, not serious as usual.
“Great,” Jimmy replied, “ Mr.Brent doesn’t do a thing about us misbehaving.”

Mark chuckled and held the school’s main entrance door open for Jimmy.

“Lady’s first.” He said.
“God, you’re such an idiot!” Jimmy retorted and pushed Mark out the door.

They came onto some steps, went down them and onto a street filled with students heading home. Jimmy and Mark both lived at the east end of the town, so they began to walk home together, passing the different school cliques: the gossipers, Goths, emos, skaters, nerds, the popular people and the wanna-be biker bullies who started to circle Jimmy and Mark as usual. There were four of them, all of them with mean looks on their faces as they cycled around them. One of them, their leader, was called Tod, the fattest, the others, Mark and Jimmy didn’t know.

“Hey losers!” Tod greeted them with a grin. ”Wanna have some fun?”
The rest of the bullies giggled. Mark just sighed, picked up a nearby stick and inserted it through the front wheel of Tod’s bike, causing him to suddenly stop and fall to the ground.
“Quick! Let’s run!” Mark exclaimed and began to run with Jimmy to home.

They slowed to a jog as they finally reached the quiet little neighourhood where they both lived. Mark and Jimmy lived just next door to each other and they had a Nigerian man as their neighbor. He was sitting on a lawn chair out on his lawn, reading a book, fiddling with his long dreadlocks as his eyes read line after line. He caught sight of Jimmy and Mark.

“Heeeyccc, mwa a bobyc!” he shouted and raised his right hand to greet them, as he always did when they came home.
“Ya……um…good afternoon!” Jimmy shouted back.
“What did he just say?” Mark asked Jimmy.
“No idea…”
Mark went his separate way and went up to his house and as Jimmy went home too.

Jimmy pushed open his front door and walked into his house’s hallway, which led to its other rooms. He walked to the end of the hall and entered the room its door led to, which was his room. His room was quite small and messy, with a unmade bed, messy study table, a desktop computer and a closet. On his wall were posters of his favorite rock bands. He lay his school bag down and dresses into comfortable clothing. His dog, a little male terrier called ‘Trouble’, came into the room with a bright red plastic ball in his mouth. Jimmy crouched down, took the ball out of Trouble’s mouth and threw it out of his window. Trouble immediately ran out of the room and out of the house to find it.
Jimmy, lured by the scent of cheese, headed over to the kitchen where his mother was preparing a meal for him. Jimmy’s little sister , Lua, was seated at the table, anxiously waiting for some food. Lua was only six years old, very annoying and noisy.

“Hey mom, hey Lua,” Jimmy greeted them, “What’s for lunch?”
“Lasagna.” His mom said.
Mark had always teased Jimmy by saying his mom was hot, and he always received a hard slap from him in return.
Jimmy ate his lunch and went back to his room to finish up his history homework. He booted up his computer, connected its internet cable, went to a search engine and typed in the word ‘Rune.’
The search engine came up with many links, but one caught his eye. At the top of the web page were the words ‘Runescape: the massive online adventure game by Jagex ltd.’ Curiosity got the better of him and he clicked on it, leading into the website of an online game. Jimmy checked out some of its screenshots, not completely impressed, so he decided to try out the game. He created an account, named it ‘ Jimmy_6758’ and then logged into the world of Runescape. At first, he thought the game was dull because of its terrible graphics, but he remember seeing that there were 215,406 people currently playing so he decided to give it a try. He finished the tutorial with ease and ended up in Lumbridge. He explored Runescape, seeing many people and strange creatures, though some of the players were a bit rude to him, calling him a ‘noob’ , a word he did not know.
People spoke in internet slang and abbreviated terms and he did not understand a thing they said, since he never used his computer to do anything but homework. Jimmy logged out when time for his dinner came. He would return to playing the following day and little did he know, Runescape would mean the very end of him………

Please notify me of any spelling errors I made and I will add more as soon as I get some feedback :)

Added descriptor to title. ~Tweedy

No spelling errors. I assume you ran this through Word. There are some minor grammatical errors, however.

Interesting... I have to try out that Google search.

Post some feedback people!!!!!

Part 2- Hooked
Jimmy got up early the next day. It was a warm Friday and he looked forward to playing paintball like he always did every Friday with Mark and some other guys from school. He took a shower, ate breakfast, played with Trouble a bit, changed up and headed outside where Mark already waited for him. They walked to school, as usual, passing by their neighbor, who was checking his mailbox.

“Heeycc!” he greeted them.” How far?”
“Good morning!” Jimmy and Mark both said, not understanding a word he said.

They arrived at school ten minutes before classes started and walked to their lockers, passing by the nerd clique.

“Lol, noob.” Mark heard many of them say.

They got out their books, the bell rang and they headed their separate ways to their classes. The day dragged on boringly until the dismissal bell rang, marking the start of the weekend. The students burst through the school exits, chattering excitedly on what they are going to on the weekend. Mark and Jimmy went home, got into their paintball gear and marched over to an abandoned junkyard where their paintball matches were held. They joined with two other people from school while going against a team of seven. Mark and Jimmy’s team won despite the odds, they always did. They even planned on going professional some day.

After winning several times, they wearily walked home, sweating and content with themselves.
“You know, I found an interesting online game on the web last night I think you should try it out as well.” Jimmy started a conversation.
“Really, what’s it called?” Mark curiously asked.
“Runescape”
“What site do I go to?”

They both went home, changed up, ate lunch and booted up their computers. Jimmy instructed Mark on how to create a runescape account over the phone. He did the tutorial and they met in Lumbridge. After greeting each other and Mark doing the dance emote several times, they went to kill some goblins. After a while, Mark got a bronze square shield, making Jimmy determined to do the same. They played late into the night, enjoying it all the way.

“I’m tired,” Mark announced, “I’m going to bed.”
“K, cya” Jimmy said, abbreviating his words as he slowly got used to the internet language.

He kept on playing, exploring runescape far into the break of dawn, not feeling a bit tired. Jimmy loved the game, he thought it was awesome, he even began to call some people a ‘noob’ too, also laughing at other people by saying ‘lol.’ He logged out and went to sleep, the morning sun rising into the sky.
By the time his eyes shut, his cell phone began to ring, waking him up. He got up reluctantly and answered it.

“Hey Jimmy-boy!” it was Mark. ” What do you to do today?”
“What?” Jimmy sleepily mumbled. “ But I just went to bed?”
“Man, were you playing Runescape the whole time?” Mark laughed.
“ Uhhh…yeah.”
Mark chuckled.

They met up later that day at a local diner for lunch. Jimmy lacked some sleep, so huge eye bags hung below his eyes. He went home early that day and collapsed into bed, but suddenly……runescape came to mind. Filled with sudden energy, he got back onto his computer and started playing it, leveling up some more until he reached level 15. Mark with his account, Mark A, logged in at night and they played along with each other. Jimmy even called Mark a noob at one point, though Mark didn’t know what it meant. They played together over the following weeks, getting equal in level and finishing several free quests until all that was left was Dragon Slayer. They both reached level 35 and they had both acquired mithril armor by then.

One day at school, Jimmy discovered that everyone in the nerd clique played runescape as well. He talked with them, discussing things about runescape, until one of the boys who referred to himself as ‘The Dark Mage,’ who was a short guy with huge, thick framed glasses, asked Jimmy what his level was.

“35!” Jimmy proudly answered.

All the boys started laughing at him and he discovered that they were all level 100+ and had all subscribed to be members. He asked for their runescape names despite this. Jimmy felt ashamed about his account’s level, but he was determined to become like them, perhaps, even one of them……

Part 3- The Fatal End

Jimmy played quite a lot over the weeks, hardly doing his homework and always getting in trouble for not paying attention in class because he was thinking of runescape too much. Mark played a lot less than him and wasn’t as dedicated and as a result, Jimmy called him a noob a lot to impress the high level players of the nerd clique. He began to even call his little sister a noob and even said the word lol when watching funny movies in the cinema with Mark. Jimmy decided to become a member one day, so he asked his mom. She refused to allow him and gave him a long lecture on the value of a dollar. However, Jimmy wasn’t paying attention, he took her credit card without permission and made himself a member, paying for it to re-credit him for two years straight, costing him exactly $120, his mother would kill him if she knew what he had just done. He logged into a member’s server, full of excitement and met up with his high level nerd friends. They went to castle wars together and even did some pest control rounds before Jimmy went on his own to do some member quests. Mark came online and Jimmy messaged him.

“Hey!” he greeted Mark. “Guess what? I’m a member now!”
“No way!”
“Yes way! :) Why don’t you ask your parents to make you one?”
“Good idea, hold on, let me ask them.”
Mark asked his parents and was also refused and given a long lecture on the value of a dollar.
“Man, they said no. :(
“That’s a shame, noob, lol!”
“Wanna come finish dragon slayer with me?”
“Sorry, but I’m doing it in a member world so I can beat him easily with my cool new gear.”
Mark suddenly felt distant from Jimmy, he barely came online again and he rarely hung out with him since Jimmy was too busy hanging out with the nerd clique, going to gaming cafes and discussing runescape related topics. Jimmy was playing runescape one Friday, he had boycotted his paintball team, deciding to go fight the King Black Dragon with his new friends instead of hanging out with Mark. After defeating the King Black Dragon several times, they walked back to Edgeville where the most unlikely thing happened to Jimmy. He was watching a level 3 skiller showing off his red partyhat at the new wilderness ditch, teasing players by jumping across it and doing the dance emote.

“Watch this!” the skiller said, and ran into the wilderness.
Everyone watched as he suddenly stopped running and a skeleton started attacking him. He did not move, his health went down….slowly….slowly until finally….he died. Everyone in Edgeville scrambled to loot his corpse and so did Jimmy, who, with amazing luck, nabbed his red partyhat. He ran back to Edgeville, with hundreds of people following him saying things like ‘give me that. It’s useless’ or ‘z0mg! phr33 partyhat p10xz!!!.’
Jimmy burst with bliss and he began to do the runescape dance in real, all his friends surrounded him, admiring the red paper crown that rest upon his pixilated head. He paraded around runescape to celebrate, the owner of the partyhat even private messaged him, asking for it back, Jimmy put him on ignore.
Suddenly, Trouble came into his room with the bright red ball in his mouth. Jimmy took it from him and tossed it out the window as usual. Trouble came back several times until Jimmy grew frustrated, logged out, walked out to his front door and threw the ball as hard as he can, across the street. Trouble ran after it and was unfortunately hit by a pick-up truck. Jimmy stood there, frozen in shock.

“Trouble!” he screamed, then ran over to his poor pooch’s body.
“O boi, wetin happen?” his neighbor asked him from his bedroom window.
“Trouble is dead!”
“Nawow.”
Jimmy knew he couldn’t let his mother know about this , so he got Trouble’s body and buried it in his back yard. Shortly after mourning, he returned to his room, depressed. However, he wasn’t depressed for long, he thought runescape would cheer him up, so he continued playing it, feeding his addiction.

The week of Jimmy’s final exams had come. He did not even prepare for it, he just kept playing runescape and he had already gotten to level 100, with full Guthans and of course, a red partyhat. He would even go to high runescape-class parties where he met famous players such as Zezima and The Old Nite. Mark logged in one time and asked Jimmy if he would go woodcutting with him in the free servers.

“Sorry, there are too many auto bots there.” He replied to him, and Mark logged out.

Jimmy did not even answer the questions on his exam papers, he only drew pictures relating to runescape on them or gave runescape related answers to the questions that somehow related to runescape. One questions in his history exam stated ‘What are runes?’ and he would answer ‘Runes are magical stones used to cast spells, they are created from magical rocks called rune essence through the skill called rune crafting.’
He went home that day with his nerd friends without care for his exam scores, Tod and his thugs did not bother him anymore. Mark started hanging out with the popular kids since he was so funny, but Jimmy took no notice of it.
At the end of the week, Jimmy received his exam scores, he went home and looked at them. He had gotten an F in everything but English and Math, he couldn’t let his mother see them, so he decided to dump them in the trashcans outside his house, but as he was about to do so, his little sister caught him.
“I’m gonna tell ma!” she threatened him, then skipped to the front door to report on him.
“Come you little twerp!” he hissed and grabbed her by the neck.
He covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming, carried her to his room and taped up her mouth. He began slapping her around, pulling her hair and screaming in her face.

“Do you still want to tell mom? HUH!” he yelled.

Tears poured down his sister’s swollen face and she shook her head.

“Good.” He said, satisfied, then let her go.

Just when his sister left the room had he realized what he had just done. He retreated to his bathroom, locked himself in and began sulk.

Two days later,on a fresh summer day, he returned home, not feeling a bit of guilt for what he had done two days earlier. He began playing runescape as soon as he arrived. His mother came into the room, holding a piece of paper in her hands.

“Have you seen Trouble lately?” she asked him.
“No.” he plainly replied, not even looking at her.
“By the way, can you explain to me what this is?” she waved the papers at him.
“Not now mom, I’m pking!”
Jimmy was player killing with his massive clan that he had made up in just a month, with over 50 members above level 100 combat level. He felt so confident with his little army that he carried his red partyhat with him. His mother suddenly disconnected his internet and Jimmy screamed in horror.
“Look at these grades, young man!” she held his exam scores at him. “You’re going to have to repeat the eight grade! And look at these!” she showed him her credit card and internet bills. “$120 dollars along with $400 dollars for the past few months! You better work this summer and make up for all this or I will remove your television and internet rights altogether and you will not be allowed to ever hang out with your friends on weekends!”
She threw the papers at him and stormed off. Jimmy went back onto runescape and found himself standing in Lumbridge. He roared in anger as he found out his partyhat was gone.

“Lol, missing something?” The Dark Mage messaged him.
“Give me back my partyhat!” Jimmy demanded.
He put him on ignore.
Jimmy suddenly pumped with rage, he grabbed his baseball bat and wore a yellow paper mask with a smiley face on it. He barged out of his house and saw Mark riding a scooter nearbye. He rode up to him.

“Hi, where are you going?” he asked.
Jimmy just kept walking, he was heading to The Dark Mage’s house. He over to it and knocked on his door. The Dark Mage answered it and Jimmy immediately drove the baseball bat into his face, shattering his glasses. Mark watched in horror as Jimmy beat the hell out of The Dark Mage. He kept swinging at him until the short, nerdy boy was on the floor, his face stained with blood, wounds and bruises.

“Tell me your password! Now! Or I’ll finish you off right here!” Jimmy demanded.
“ Iamzezima, just leave me alone!” The Dark Mage sobbed and Jimmy stormed off, Mark still with shock on his face.
“I’ve got to do something….” He said to himself.
Jimmy hacked into The Dark Mage’s account and took back the red partyhat then got the account banned by going around and asking for people’s passwords. He felt happy that he got his revenge for a moment, but he suddenly felt sick to the stomach. He went to his toilet and puked his lunch out. He then grabbed a shaving razor from his bathroom mirror and began to cut his wrist because he felt so depressed. He treated his cut then threw up again and went back to playing runescape. It made him feel so good for some reason and he played throughout the night.
The next day was the day before the end of school, his nerd friends did not even come near him, they had probably heard what he had done to The Dark Mage. He ate alone at the cafeteria that day. He just sat at his desk throughout the day, thinking of runescape and the dismissal bell marking the end of the school day. Jimmy walked home alone and was jumped by Tod and his thugs. They gave him the beating of his life and covered him in bruises. Where was Mark when he needed him? Nevertheless, he went home and continued playing runescape, not even stopping to eat lunch or take in the fact that he had no more friends except his runescape girlfriend, whom he payed to ‘date’ him. The next morning, before school ,he booted up his computer to play some more runescape, it was the last day of school and he felt slightly blissful, but his bliss suddenly demolished when he found his account had been banned for password scamming. Mark called him through his cell phone.

“I’m sorry, Jimmy, I just had to do it, you were getting too addicted to the game!” Mark apologized to him.
“YOU MOTHER *insert bunny here*, IM GOING TO KILL YOU!” Jimmy yelled, seething with rage and threw the phone to the floor. He dressed and went over to his mother’s room without her knowing. He opened his mother’s closet, fished around for an old red shoebox, opened it and pulled out a fully loaded, six-shot revolver in it. His mother had told him where she kept it just incase they needed it some day in an emergency. He walked slowly to school that day, nothing mattered to him now that his account was gone, carrying the revolver. He arrived there five minutes before the bell, everyone in the hall fled at the sight of the gun. He came over to Mark, who was talking with the nerd clique. Jimmy cocked the gun and took careful aim at them. It would be a grim summer day…..and five shots rang out before he turned the gun on himself……

Wow. Very nice. It was good how the addiction built up over time, and how he slowly cast off his old life and friends in order to play more and more runescape. Very interesting.

Interesting, but not all that realistic. Jimmy must have had problems going in. If my dog died, I would be sad... :(

It has a sad ending. How can someone get addicted over RuneScape like that?

These people have mental problems. This is in no way the story of an average RuneScape player.

Wow. At first I was pretty uninterested, but this story was actually pretty alright. I don't care much for your writing style, as it lacks details and realism, but the structure of this was really good. You have potential to be a great writer, all you need to do is let your skills grow!

This story absolutely shocked me!! I was not expecting this, and it almost made me cry. I got worried about the dog part as well, but when he beat up Dark Mage was when I just absoluetly went into shock mode.

Wow. That was very interesting, simply stunning, and even a tad bit creepy. The progress of his decline and alienation was told very well, I commend you on that.

If it makes any sense, right where he beats up The Dark Mage, my eyes got really wide from the sheer craziness of what was going on. That's never actually happened before when I was reading a story, which points out that you really surprised me. :P

You've got talent, that's for sure. :) Good luck with future stories!

(I realize I'm a tad late on the post, but hey, it was bumped, and I had time to read it.)

Not a bad read! I enjoyed it, and I was immensely surprised as to what happened in the end. Good job, keep writing!
