Anyone seen it yet? I watched it the other night. I definitely was taken aback to see Hugh Jackman and Kurt Russell singing together in 19th century France

As a self-proclaimed amateur film critic, I hated the movie for the most part.

I've never been much of a "musicals" fan, but I think I'll end up watching it. I mean, the cast seems interesting and the trailer has some awesome looking cinematography. But for those who want the French, non-musical version, here's a series with GĂ©rard Depardieu and John Malkovich from back in 2000:

There are English subtitles for those who don't speak French.

For me, plopping A-list actors in where seasoned Broadway veterans belong was not a good thing. And while during a discussion in the RV Lounge someone pointed out that Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway are trained singers, that doesn't make them any good. Not to say there wasn't anything good about their performances, it was just lacking. As I said then, the mediocre off-key singing matched with impeccable acting created a similar effect as the cinematography.

It's also funny that Arnaud mentions cinematography when that was likely the single most distracting thing in the movie. There is some that is really incredible, like the shot/s from the opening scene. But it's badly juxtaposed with 2-3 minute long static, medium closeups of the actors singing their songs. It was startling for someone with an eye for the technical elements of a film.

Plus it was just too long.

I don't look at it really as a musical, or as comparable to the broadway production or the book. I look at it as a film, and I thought it was garbage.

Watch it live in the theatre. Maybe it won't suck.

I got in free to see the film.
I walked out after the guy tried to sing and cry at the same time.

Gona double post cus i am awesome.

So finally watched a pirate version (dvd quality as its a copy of the ones sent to award judges for viewing). As a film telling a story it is better than a musical as it flows together well, it has a few weird changes than the theater musical.

The Theater version is much better on the musical side. but i would say give the film a watch just for the story itself and try to bear with some of the musicals (missing verses, some badly sung songs and rewritten songs)

I know this film made quite a few people cry..

I most likely won't watch it, not until it comes out on basic cable or something.
