Let me start by saying that I went into these runs with the full intent of recording every piece of data I could. I tracked the usage of all Pot’s, Food, Arrows, Runes and Gold. I also tracked which Brother I killed in the tunnel on each run, where the tunnel showed up each run, total kill count on each run and, once I figured out that the types of monsters killed in the tunnels influenced your Rune drops, I started tracking those as well. So with that out of the way, lets look at some data. Where I say total kills, it is exactly that, total kills which includes the Brothers themselves.

Runs 1-100 On these first 100 runs, I killed all brothers and then got my Kill count up. A few of these runs had only the 6 Brother kills, some had as many as 15 kills but not more than that.

I wanted to see what a hundred runs of 8 KC would produce, as well as continue to generate Chaos Runes.

That’s 118 items in 1400 runs. That’s a Good drop about every 11.8 runs. Although, I think a more realistic average is 12-14 runs per item since that last series of runs tweaked the numbers a bit

Some final observations.

As I was compiling these numbers, I noticed several things right off.

First, is the kill count. If you look you’ll notice that as a general rule, the smaller the kill count, the more Minds and Chaos Runes you get, but at the same time you get fewer Deaths, Bloods and Bolt Racks.

As a matter of fact, if you look at runs 201-300 you notice something very startling. On these runs I only killed the 6 brothers and had 0 other kills. As a result – 0 Blood Runes and 0 Bolt Racks. At the same time, I got more Gold by far on this run than any other. That indicates that there is a formula at work behind the scenes. How the formula works would be interesting to know.

If you want Bolt racks, get the higher kill counts. With 600 kills I had 0 Bolt Racks, 900 kills was 210 Bolt Racks. 1365 kills was 2986 Bolt racks and then 1489 kills equaled 3354 Bolt Racks. It’s easy to see this increase in Racks as the kills go up.

If you use Magic Dart you should remember thati if you are running low on Mind Runes you need to make a few runs with a low kill count, this should start increasing the amount of Minds you are getting from the chest. By the same token, if you are running low on Death Runes, you want to increase your kill count for a few runs to increase the amount of Death’s you are getting from the chest.

The only magic I use is Magic dart and since I started this I have never had to buy any Runes to continue using it. My runs are keeping me completely supplied.

If you are using Ancient magic, and are attacking with Blood based spells, you need to get you kill count at 14 or higher, this will get you more Blood Runes in the chest.

Second, lets talk Brother drops in relation to kills.

I think it is random, but I could be wrong. Lets looks at the runs and the average kills vs. drops

Set 1***001-100 --- 10 kills average – 8 Brother Drops
Set 2***101-200 --- 14 kills per run – 8 Brother Drops (9 if you count the Drag Med)
Set 3***201-300 --- 6 kills per run – 2 Brother Drops
Set 4***301-400 --- 9 kills per run – 7 Brother Drops
Set 5***401-500 --- 15 kills average – 5 Brother Drops (6 if you count the Drag Med)
Set 6***501-600 --- 14 kills average – 9 Brother Drops

So again, Set 3 was just the 6 Brothers on each run and nothing else and 2 Drops. The least kills and the fewest drops. But because I have only this one set of 100, I would not go so far as to say that this is a true indication. Although I will point out that the runs before and after went back to what I consider a normal drop rate of about 1 drop in every 13 runs.

Just my opinion, but these numbers would suggest that a kill count of 10-14 will get you your best return on your investment.

As I mentioned at the top, I have also noticed that what creatures I kill can drive me toward certain runes in the chest.

Listed below are chest drop averages by creature. These numbers are based on 15 runs of only that particular creature. All of these were done on kill counts of 9 (So 3 of the particular creature and the 6 brothers on each run)

Bloodworm – 298M – 88D – 135B – 21C – 122G – 0BR
Crypt Rat – 246M – 75D – 164B – 24C – 1084G – 0BR
Giant Crypt Rat – 189M – 81D – 162B - 0C – 1063G – 0BR
Crypt Spider – 74M – 98D – 162B – 39C – 1454G – 0BR
Giant Crypt Spider – 405M – 53D – 250B – 39C – 483G – 0BR
Skeleton – 291M – 70D – 115B – 40C – 1144G – 3BR
Skeleton with Shield – 417M – 86D – 109B – 33C – 1101G – 6BR

So, based on this data

If you want Mind Runes – kill the Skeletons with shields or Giant Crypt Spiders
For Death Runes – Crypt Spiders or Bloodworms
For Blood Runes – Giant Crypt Spider is your best choice
For Chaos Runes – Skeletons, Crypt Spiders or Giant Crypt Spiders
For Gold – have your head examined, this is not the place to be if your just after gold
For Bolt Racks – Skeletons with shields is by far the best return, followed by regular Skeletons

Remember this is only a 15 run sample of each creature.

I had a lot of fun doing these 600 runs, I had been concentrating on getting to slayer 85 and was burnt out on that so went and did the Barrows for a while. I feel refreshed and will be making another run at level 85 slayer, (only 1 and a half levels to go). Once I get 85, (and snag a whip or 2 of course ), I will return to the Barrows to finish up my little study.

My next set of runs will be exploring higher kill counts, I am going to do 100 runs at 18 kills, then 21 kills then 24 kills. When I get to 1000 runs I shall post again the total results and any observations that I have had.

I hope this information can help any of you that are currently doing barrow runs, or give some confidence to those of you that would like to but don’t know what the rewards might be.

Virus 969 - Thanks for the nice words, but this should NOT be stickied. I don’t consider this a guide, this is just what I recorded on my trips. I have absolutely no doubts that what you do in the Barrows effects what you get in the chest, the problem is that I don’t know exactly how that interaction takes place between your kills and your chest drops. If I knew exactly how it worked, then that would certainly merit the sticky status.

Talleywack – As to the first part of your question, here are the totals I have used so far in 600 Barrow runs killing, 6,760 creatures (3,600 brothers and 3,160 others).

Swordfish – 847 I used Swordfish for my first 300 runs, then I switched to sharks because I had used up all the swordies I had in the bank.
Sharks – 618 on the last 300 runs
Rune Arrows – ‘Lost’ 1201 arrows. This was on killing Ahrim 600 times so that’s 2 Rune Arrows lost per run.
Mind Runes – Used 131,896
Death Runes – Used 32,974
Prayer Pots (4 Dose) – Used 1,259. A note here, for the first 300 runs I used prayer on all the brothers. For the last 300 I did not use prayer on Torag and Ahrim.
Gold (For Buying Food and Pots back from the General Store) – 237,336

i am veeeeery very intrigued in this topic. I am so happy someone has come to their senses and tested the barrows formula. I've had roughly 29 brother drops so far and for the first 25 of them i had 1-2 monster kills (random monsters) and averaged 8.25 runs per item. Since then i switched to ancients and no monster kills and have averaged 27 trips per item

id like to request that u do another 100 trips on just 6 kils to test ur previous results

Not a problem, I can include that in the next 400, like I said earlier I will do 100 at 18, 100 at 21 and 100 at 24. I had planned on going back and visiting the 6 kill run again but had not set a time for it, this will be a good time to do that. I will probably do it between 18 and 21 so I have some other data on either side to judge it aginst. Like I said, I want to get my level 85 slayer first (i'm only 83 now so thats 484,000 xp away), and I need to plant some Rannar seeds, but I still have 187 of them so that should get me all the Prayer Pots I need to do all of these 400 runs (I'll plant 4 seeds between each slayer assignment to get going on it). I have abount 450 sharks left in the bank so I will need to catch and cook a few more of those. 100 runs typically takes 4-10 days depending on what my family commitments are like, so we are looking at late May or early June probably before I finish the next 400 runs. As long as you can wait I dont mind doing them.

Gobberhop, I did not directly track xp by run or anything. I did note on what runs I moved levels while in the Barrows.

I was very pleased with how fast my Magic went up while battleing the brothers, here is a list of the runs.

I did other things along the way, so this is not all Barrows driven, although I will say that for the most part the Magic is all Barrows.


Thats a nice drop amount you have. I have got about everything except Guthans pretty consistantly. I dont know why but I have got 3 Guthan Platebodys and no other Guthan drops. Can you recall on your drops was Guthan hard to come by as well? I presume it's random, but I am getting a little tired of Karil's and Ahrim's armour drops.

Another thing I have noticed is a pattern in that when I get 1 drop, I almost always get another within the next 1-6 runs. Then maybe a break of 15-25 runs and then another pair. Certinally not every time, but it has happened enough that I have noticed it.



Again I want to reiterate that this is not a guide, if you check the stickied section of this Forum you will see a very useful guide by S.S.4Goten on some of the tips and tricks that can make your Barrows trips both fun and profitable.

What I hope this does is give you guys an idea that the Barrows drops will come if you stay with it. I mean if you look at the numbers, the averages suggest you will get a drop every 15 runs. But thats just the average. I had gaps between brother drops of 50 runs, 39 runs, 35 runs, 32 runs, 25 runs and so on. Way more than the 15 run average. I see post after post of people that do 25-40 runs and only get 1 drop or no drops at all and they give up. This post was written to give those people some idea of the drop rate and that sometimes it's not all roses, but over time, it is pretty consistant and if they just stay with it, they will get the drops.

Well, if you get a good drop about every 15 runs (avg), then I have terrible luck.

But, I knew that already.

The only thing I personally found interesting was the breakdown of runes by monster. I knew there had to be some breakdown of that, but I wasn't sure what it was.

It is fairly common knowledge that what you get from the brothers is pretty much random, and that you can only get items from the brothers that you killed.

I got from 65-80 mage at barrows i think

as for guthan drops, my first one was my 3rd ever drop i got a plate, but ive never had a plate since :S

ive had 1 spear, 2 skirts, but 4 helms somehow :S
