In my honest opinion, the main mafia games are very unwieldy. In such a large game, there are the following major cons:

- Lynches are very hard to achieve due to the large 'votes to lynch' number
- Games are hard to balance
- Games last far too long
- After being killed, players have to sit out for a long time before the next mafia game
- Simply put, too many players

Here is my proposed idea to solve the problem: Multiple main mafia games

Here's one way we could do it:

One signup topic
Two proposed hosts

After the signup is closed, the players are divided up equally and put into two different mafia games.

This easily solves the cons I listed above, but it too has a few cons

- Players will be unable to play with the full group of players
- Those who LIKE larger games will be sol

Thoughts?

I say we give this a shot for the next mafia, and if it doesn't work out or people are unhappy with it, we switch back to the traditional method.

I don't really care, I'll play either way. I say that we don't need two main games, per say. They aren't that hard to balance at all. The reason they go on for so long and lynches are hard to achieve is because of inactivity.

And besides, if the next variant wasn't another upick (takes a good deal of time to coordinate), we'd be playing a variant right now.

I MIGHT be more willing to support a non-legends game going on at the same time as the main game, though. Because the legends have the public game and the legends game going.

There is a reason I cap off any game I host at 15-18 players. :?: Most people hosting their games want as many people as possible, though, which results in 25+ player games.

There is no rule prohibiting anyone from creating a signup topic and new game at any time they desire. It is basically just accepted etiquette that only one general game and only one variant exist at any given time.

What I propose is one variant and two general games be allowed to exist at any given time, but the restriction that you are only allowed to play in a maximum of two games at any given time. So, you can play in both general games but not the variant, or the variant and one general game, or just one general game, or just the variant.

This would work well if the second general game was started halfway through the first, as it would decrease the waiting time for dead players to a minimum in the long run.

I concur. We must lynch him now for the sake of the metagame, we MUST teach people that they can't go around claiming "anniversary" and expect leniency. Topsummoner.

Legend's doesn't do mafia anymore, not enough total interest.

I support Paidea's option, but the one lander offered would be nice too.

Speaking of Upick, the reason it isn't up yet is because I've been waiting for the server change, but that keeps on not happening, so I'm not sure what to do.

I agree with Paid, just put a player limit, and stick to it.

I'd like to see a rule where if you don't post once a game day without prior notice, you die, or something to that effect. That should curb inactivity real fast.

I don't like player limits because what happens to those who simply are in the wrong time zone to get in?

^That. Do exactly that. Though, you should not die if the day is less than 24 hours.

It would also help eliminate the "strategy" of not posting to keep attention off of yourself.

True enough, but that "strategy" is still just that, a strategy, and it ought to be allowed to be practiced to some extent, as much as we hate it.

Like I said, I wouldn't be opposed to two games going at once. I just don't think it's necessary. I support the idea of having another mafia game start like halfway through the first game, and maybe only allowing those who are dead in the first game and/or those who didn't make signup.

Hmm, what's to stop the people who go inactive(not the ones who use it as a stratagy) in the current games from just doing that in one of the new games? Because people sign up for game after game even though they don't participate.

I support Paid's option.

Also, I believe a punishment should be invoked if someone continues to contribute to the topic after death; such as a ban from the next game, a mute for the first day of the next game or something of that nature. It's one thing to have an ODP or two, but to continue to post as if you never died is unacceptable.

Yes.
Yes.
One million times yes.
Once you die, you are granted ONE Obligatory Death Post. ONE.
Is that hard to understand?

As a host, you are allowed to make your own rules regarding inactive players and when it becomes appropriate to modkill them. Some hosts are also kind to prods requested by other players.

Actually lynching players who use an inactive strategy like "I'm here guys, looking over the thread, will post later" is a whole new topic for debate...

I can't tell you how much I agree with this. ODP's are usually annoying normally, and then some people just keep talking and disrupt the normal game.

Honestly, I've played in over a dozen Mafia games--

--and I have not once made a post after dying, even an "ODP" or a "Darn I died" edit. It's really not that hard to restrain yourself. With the amount of post-death posts I see in Lit. Soc. I know I'd be punishing people for breaking rules if I was the host, lol.

Games aren't hard to balance if you keep EVERY ratio about the same.
3:1 villagers to mafia
3:1 power roles on each side
Etc.

Also, wouldn't it be an option to PM the host of the game saying "I'm actually going to sit and watch without posting more than necessary, so excuse days with no posts" in the event that someone actually DOES sit and watch, as opposed to someone who gives up after day three?

As per ODP. "You know who to kill", "You know what to do", "I told you ___ is _____", etc. should be unacceptable.
"I told you so" (as in the village didn't believe a lynchee's role), funny pictures, "Ah crap"s, etc. should be allowed. ONCE, as stated.

As per two games...
Would multiple people be allowed into both games at once to keep the numbers from being too small? Because I see it being easier to just set a limit on how many players are allowed, or do an invitation-only game. :?:

I for one don't mind sitting back and just reading the Mafia games as they happen so I think it would be sweet to do an invitation only game, even if I wouldn't be in it.

Edit::: Hey look at that, 1500 posts
