ルンヴィラジェ日本語翻訳アカデミー にようこそ

Run'viraje nihongo hon'yaku akademī ni yōkoso

Welcome to Runevillage's Japanese Translation Academy (JTA)

Hello everyone! If you've been in RV's chat during the past weeks, you might've seen me, Jackstick and occasionally Sawa-chan discussing Japanese translations. Basically, we took some screenshots from the Clannad game written in Japanese, and since then we've been trying to translate them. If you don't know what Clannad is, then I'm sorry but we cannot be friends. Just kidding
Now that we've made some progress, I thought that it would be a good idea to share our work with you guys. I will be updating this thread periodically.
The format will go like this : First I will show you the picture, then the text in Japanese followed by its rōmaji counterpart. I will hide our translation using spoilers so you guys can have a shot at it too.

We would also be very pleased to discuss the Japanese language with anyone interested. I am currently learning it, and trust me : this little exercise has taught me lots of stuff. If you find errors in our translations, feel free to mention them. I'll gladly correct them (and learn something along the way!)

So, without further ado, let's get started! がんばってください

一 (いち / ichi / 1) : Picture #1

手を重ねるということを意識しているのか、さっきに比べ僅かに手の平の感触が固い。

Te o kasaneru toyuu koto o ishiki shiteiru no ka, sakki ni kurabe wazuka ni tenohira no kanshoku ga katai.

Hidden:
Once she realized that our hands were overlapping, I felt her stiffening under my palm.

二 (に / ni / 2) : Picture #2

古河 [だんご大家族は大家族なんです。だから、たくさんいるんです]

Furukawa [Dango daikazoku wa daikazoku nan desu. Dakara, takusan iru n desu]

三 (さん / san / 3) : Picture #3

その女生徒が俺の存在に気づき、手を止めていた。

Hidden:
The schoolgirl noticed my presence, and her hands stopped.

四 (し / shi / 4) : Picture #4

智代 [そう、女心は複雑というやつだ。これは、女の子らしくはないか]

Tomoyo [Sou, onnagokoro wa fukuzatsu toyuu yatsuda. Kore wa, onnanokorashiku wanai ka]

Hidden:
Tomoyo [Well yes, I guess that a woman’s heart is a complex thing. Isn’t this how girls are?]

五 (ご / go / 5) : Picture #5

真剣なまなざしと、自分の家のようなくつろいだ格好が、不釣り合いだった。

Shinkenna manazashi to, jibun no ie no youna kutsuroida kakkou ga, fu tsuriaidatta.

Hidden:
This one is tricky, there are 2 entirely different translations :
1-After a thorough observation, I started to see that this place looked more like a laid-back home than a library.
This one is supported by the context (which I can provide if you wish), but not by the general usage of these Japanese words.
Please note that this translation is only possible when you look at the context. There is no mention of a library in the actual sentence.

2-Her serious face looked out of place considering her casual, at-home like manner.
However, many translators agree that this translation is more correct if you look at this sentence alone.

六 (ろく / roku / 6) : Picture #6

ことみ [ご本を粗末にあつかったら、ダメ]

Kotomi [Go hon wo somatsu ni atsukattara, dame]

Hidden:
Kotomi [Please don’t handle books roughly]
Note : This is a pretty liberal translation.

七 (しち / shichi / 7) : Picture #7

智代 [好きな人のために作る、愛情のこもった料理だ]

Tomoyo [Sukina hito no tame ni tsukuru, aijou no komotta ryourida]

Love the topic, yay JTA! ^_^

For those of you interested, This site is very helpful tool for finding and translating kanji. Pretty simple to use, too.

Hi guys.

Just throwing up what I would translate these as. Amateur translator of probably 100+ anime episodes, manga chapters etc, and finished 2 years of full-on university Japanese studies. Obviously, since there is limited context (AND JAPANESE NEEDS CONTEXT RAWR) some of these may be off, but this is what I'd throw them together as in English.

Hidden:
1: After he realized we were holding hands, he's grabbing me much tighter.

2: The big Dango family is a big family, so of course there's many of them!
(Obviously, this translation needs context as to whether she's talking about her dolls, or just the family, but this is my translation if I got only that frame.)

3: As that female student [she] noticed me, her hand stopped.
(I hate translating word-for-word. It's stiff, and smells of bad translators. Not that I'm trying to be an arse, it's just my preference. :3 )

4: Yup, a woman's heart is a mysterious thing. Don't you think this is feminine?
(Nowhere in this sentence it says "to a guy." I know I speak of liberal translations, but that's just changing the meaning.)

5: [Fuzzy Bunny me, I'll do this one later. I don't think you've got the right idea, but I can't put mine into words right now.] When you look around, it really stings your eye how this place feels like your home.
[a? home, maybe. Context!]

6: (I agree)

7: The food that you make for the person you love, is full of passion.

8: As long as you can find another thing that you enjoy or love, things will turn out allright.

9: Didn't you want to hear my guitar?
[Really, guys? Really? Now you were just being lazy.]

10: (Agree, except I instead of I've. English grammar fail!)

Thanks a lot for helping! Here are my thoughts :

That makes sense, but I don't see where you're taking the "grabbing" part from. As for whether or not it's a he or a she, we couldn't tell because of the lack of context.

2: The big Dango family is a big family, so of course there's many of them!
(Obviously, this translation needs context as to whether she's talking about her dolls, or just the family, but this is my translation if I got only that frame.)

Makes sense. I'm pretty sure she's talking about the family, or maybe a drawing. But not about dolls.

3: As that female student [she] noticed me, her hand stopped.
(I hate translating word-for-word. It's stiff, and smells of bad translators. Not that I'm trying to be an arse, it's just my preference. :3 )

Well yes technically "she" would be appropriate, but 女生徒 cannot always be translated as "she" since it means "schoolgirl". That's why we've used that term.

4: Yup, a woman's heart is a mysterious thing. Don't you think this is feminine?
(Nowhere in this sentence it says "to a guy." I know I speak of liberal translations, but that's just changing the meaning.)

This one annoyed us. Could you tell me what "やつだ" means? We thought it might be a slightly rude way to refer to "a guy", but we couldn't find out for sure. The rest of your correction seems fair, although its pretty similar to ours.

5: [Fuzzy Bunny me, I'll do this one later. I don't think you've got the right idea, but I can't put mine into words right now.] When you look around, it really stings your eye how this place feels like your home.
[a? home, maybe. Context!]

The library part comes from said context. I'm pretty confident about our translation here. I guess that "a thorough observation" is slightly too wordy, but apart from that I think we got it right.

6: (I agree)

Great! :P

7: The food that you make for the person you love, is full of passion.

Okay so we weren't too far off. Thanks.

8: As long as you can find another thing that you enjoy or love, things will turn out allright.

Sorry, but I think our translation is actually better here. There's no "as long as [...] things will turn out allright" part.

9: Didn't you want to hear my guitar?
[Really, guys? Really? Now you were just being lazy.]

Yea after looking at it again I can see where I've messed up. Thanks.

10: (Agree, except I instead of I've. English grammar fail!)

Bleh sorry. ^_^;

We fail at #5.

This was so obvious when this was pointed out to me. >_<;

"There was no balance between her serious expression and her homely presence."

まなざし means 'look' as in a face or expression, not look as in to look. >_<;;

DOUBLE POST :weird:

Added 2 new ones. Some of you might recognize them. I'm not sure about #12, so if someone could help it'd be greatly appreciated.

I've honestly got no idea about the meaning of 自信作, so I'm not gonna comment on that, but it looks correct-ish, but it probably isn't. ^,^

As for the rest, it's about what I'd translate them as. I'm sure the scabs one is a proverb and should have a better translation somewhere to be found, but I'm lazy and can't be butted to search for one :D

Pretty easy sentences this time though. ;3

EDUT: Asked around. 自信作 = Something you make that you're proud of. So the sentence would be. "It's delicious, innit? I'm really proud of it!"

Makes sense, but what about the `よねえ~` at the end? Doesn't that mean something like `don't you thinnnk?`

I had a whole 2 hour class session just the teacher trying to explain the differences in sentences when a different intonation is used, for example when ending with 'ne'. However, I didn't really pay attention.

Added some new pictures. They're quite Kanji-heavy this time.
