So I've got a few song ideas bouncing around in my head.

I've also got some sort of 3-D maze game I want to make.

Oh hey I should totally put my songs in my game. Great idea Jaron.

...Does anyone have any advice on good places to make music? I have an old Macbook so Garageband is available but I really don't want to use it...

The only way to go for DIY recording is ProTools on a Mac.

Did you ever end up doing anything, Jaron?

I never did end up making anything, but I recently asked the question again on Facebook because I'd still like to for Crissaegrim (the game I'm making, though it's 2D now). I don't really have access to my Mac anymore any its battery is shot. :(

I did purchase GarageBand for my iPhone but it's not what I want out of it. If I recall correctly, GarageBand for Mac was way better. I want a way to pick out the notes to play and when and how long, and some beats might be nice too...

Thanks for the input guys. I still want to do this but nothing I've seen has really worked for me.

Honestly, if that's what you're lookin' to do, FruityLoops is definately the way to go. I believe they have a trial version so you can get the feel of it, but the extras that the full version has is where its at.

I will look into that when the semester is over then; thank you!

I've got five more things I want to add before I start letting Villagers playtest it (although even then you can't do anything but move and jump around in a multiplayer world and that's it currently). The bad news is that my computer is running it oddly slow lately and that I have finals until, like, next week. But I will most definitely be posting a topic about it in the Gaming forum relatively soon so you can see it. :D Thanks for asking!

I'm personally on a games course (Computer and video games is actually the name of the course). I did a lot of the audio for the game we made last year and I'm doing audio as well as 3D modelling this year.

Personally I used Massive, Repear and Soundbooth for sound.

I seem to remember messing around with a program called Finale in high school. It created either sheet music or MIDI tracks with a number of timbres, so it might be what you're looking for.

I don't really know much about the music part, but to make the game I would use Unreal Engine . (However it looks like you already started)

Scrap garageband and look into FL Studio, Reason, Sony Acid Pro, or Ableton.

AFAIK garageband doesn't let you do nearly as much as any of those listed softwares.

I think I used Finale back in the day, but MIDI isn't quite what I'm looking for. Thanks anyway bluecoat. =)

And thanks for the suggestions, everyone. Once this winter break is over and I'm back in my dorm all the time, I'm going to try out FL Studio. :D The trailer videos for it made it look like exactly what I want, so I'm excited to give it a go!

I bought FLStudio and gave it a little trial go. It IS pretty easy to make stuff, though it has a couple of snags that I find annoying but I'll learn to tiptoe around. (Deleting something in one track kinda deletes the same instrument's notes in all other tracks and it's not undoable???)

I made a couple simple things though to see how it works, in case you're interested in the result of giving your opinions. 8) The first is like my first 2 minutes of using the product. The second is a relatively quick attempt at one of the melodies I once came up with. I went overboard with stuff but I wanted to see how it worked, haha.

For the second one, I imagined someone beat boxing while playing legend of dragoon.

Haha yeah. My mom said it sounded vaguely like Canon in D. I've got songs stuck in my head 24/7 (Topsummoner can tell you that I've looped songs for 10 hours straight before) so it's kind of difficult for me to come up with something that I'm not accidentally ripping off of something else, but I think these are original enough.

FL Studio's screenshots sold me because they were how I wanted it to work. :P But thank you.

My buddy produces using FLStudio, and that melody instantly reminded me of one of his tracks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4082oe83_0

He's bought some of the add-ons to get his sound.
FL is fuuuun. I'm glad you're already delving in. :) Good luck! Post your tracks when you get some. I would love to listen.
