Hey guys, I just recently joined the volunteer firehall in my town. I come from a town of under 1,200 people so there are no "stay in" fireman. All volunteers. Most of which are a lot older than me, because I am only 19. I was just wondering if anyone here is a firefighter, volunteer or not. And I thought it might make for a good discussion.

I know for a fact that when that pager goes off for the first time, I am not going to know what to do. Any advice for a first timer ?

I use to hang out with a lot of fire fighters when I was going though my EMT stuff. Nice guys. They tended to be better to pal around with then police officers.

Anywho... It's a nice gig. I know the new guys usually got stuck with the grunt work on the staff. Carrying hoses and other fun activities. I can't speak to a direct knowledge of how all volunteer firefighting departments work. Are they going to send you through an Academy? Have you already graduated? If you want to stick with being a Firefighter, go get your EMT-B license. It makes you significantly more employable when the full time departments are looking.

Speaking of which, what does your department cover? Just fire or do they go fire & rescue? What kind of equipment do you guys carry?

I really haven't got an in depth look at all the aspects yet. I know they have rescue equipment and all that. 5 trucks I do believe. I will not be going through any major training courses, within' a year I need to take a Level 1 course, which can be taken on weekends, takes about a month or two I believe. There isn't any career connections in this for me, basically just doing it because I want to be active in the community, and it seems to be really interesting. I have a full time job on top of it, as do all the other guys, so none of them are really career based.
