Uhm, hi guys. :?: (Had to get that smiley in there)

I don't know if there's (m)any of the people I used to hang out with way back in the days still here, but I saw some familiar names still when having a quick browse through the thread...

Like many others, I haven't been checking in here for a very long time. I had to check, but it's getting closer to 12 years since I first joined here... holy crap. I guess that explain why it feels like ages ago.

And just like many others, I'm very thankful to having had RV back in those days of my teens. Learnt a lot back then. I was a fairly shy kid, didn't always make friends easily. But RV was always welcoming and bit of a "family" in those days.

Now, I guess almost 10 years since I was really active here, I've left the security of the familiar surroundings and moved abroad nearly 5 years ago. Lived in several different countries, had jobs I never expected, made countless friends, and not looking to go back any time soon.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, I'm a different person now, and at least in part thanks to my experience here. And I owe big thanks for that.

If there's anyone that knows/remembers me and would like to get/stay in touch, drop me a PM and we can sort out contacts etc... :)

For everyone here, all the best for the future. And remember the good times you had. :)

After reading this, I think a big part of me (4 years or so?) just died a bit inside. I'll be back to post a heartfelt response not on my mobile.

An Update on RuneVillage's Status

I basically spent all of last weekend attempting to copy RuneVillage over to a site I already own so it can continue from there. Some things succeeded, some things didn't. RuneVillage itself is just so gigantic that normal ways of copying databases aren't allowed because of file size limits, and even then there seem to be a few hiccups. (For instance, the database copying would fail on a certain private message. It turns out some guy ages ago sent nasty PMs to people that included roughly 47,000 twisted emoticons, and long story short it took so long to copy that my server would get bored and give up.) The seemingly-final obstacle in my way failed but didn't tell me why, and I didn't have enough time to figure it out. I'm going to try to perform another server copy, but the amount of time I would need borders on the possible tens of hours depending on what goes wrong, and I can't currently do that with my schoolwork this semester.

The original hosting deadline was today, but Jackstick and I have put enough money forward to keep RV alive for two more months, taking us into mid-May. It is my plan that after this semester is over, I'll give it another go, and we'll see what happens there. RuneVillage is all about the history--if it turns out that we can't have that, there's not really much reason to start a new, blank forum elsewhere--so this project is important to me.

So in the end, RV's end has been delayed for at least two more months. Carry on. 8)

Can't you divvy RV up into pieces and upload it in chunks small enough for the server to handle, then piece it together? Or is that just not possible? (Spitballing here, I have no clue how this stuff works.)

Jaron my guess from your post is you were using a web interface ?

Jack has my Skype if you need help I will provide it. A large backup will not be an issue using the correct tools

Haha, I didn't bother to look up who it was. He was being quite a nasty jerk in the PMs though so I wouldn't think it was you!

I'm actually doing that, in a way. :) And if I continue not getting error messages for the final step, I'm going to break it into chunks as well and see which chunk fails and which ones work.

A variety of things, actually. My initial attempt was phpBB's Admin Control Panel's Backup/Restore because that was the most recommended. I tried several other things, including but not limited to phpMyAdmin's tools as well as BigDump, the Staggered MySQL Importer specifically for big databases. All of these methods actually had the same effects and results, so I'm becoming increasingly convinced that it's not a matter of how, but rather a matter of being RV.

Both the web ones are useless for larger databases. Mysqldump is likely your best option.

Command line based though so harder to use. If its the restore just do it direct with the mysql command

You can blame Java's stupid security policies covering their own ass for that because they're Fuzzy Bunny Fuzzy Bunny at making something that isn't exploitable.

Not gonna lie, I didn't have time to read all of this. I'll be honest, its been ages since I last checked into RV and it seems like the place has died (whether or not the site has technically closed).

As a few others have said, the next time I drop by to have a browse the site will probably have shut down.

Thanks everyone, it was a blast.

The sequel to Everyone Read, entitled Everything is Awesome, details how that will not be the case. 8)
