So I found the rules to this weird game online, and wanted to gauge interest in it. Seems like it could be fun to play online.

http://www.earlham.edu/~peters/writing/ ... 0to%20play

It's called "Nomic", and it seems a lot simpler than that site makes it sound. There are a number of rules to start, and the point is to change those rules. Everyone gets a turn, going in alphabetical order (unless that rule is changed), and does some weird equation that Paidea will have to explain to me to calculate points. Then they propose a rule change, and everyone votes on it or proposes amendments (unless these rules are changed). Then more points are added. If the vote is passed, the rule is changed.

There are two ways to win (assuming the rules aren't changed):
1) Get to 200 points
2) Create a paradox that prevents you from completing your turn.

Bare in mind that if an inconsistency is found, the person who went before you acts as judge to determine what happens with that rule. They don't have to go off of previous decisions, and it is their determination alone.

The first set of rules cannot be changed, and the second set can. The second set can be changed in a way that the first set can be, though. No rules can be actually added, and all changed rules recieve the "300" header. Example: Mutable rule 201 is changed to something else, and becomes rule 301 (this is to keep things easier to remember, I assume).

I've never actually played this, but was thinking the Lit Society would be a good place to try it. Just looking for thoughts on the matter.

Well, statistically speaking, slightly more than a giant suckusaur. A dire one.

I have actually played a small face-to-face game of this before, and although we didn't finish, it was quite fun. :)

I read the page from the link provided; I had never seen an initial ruleset so complex before, but a lot of it is common sense.

Pros: no "host" required, just someone with knowledge of the game to set it up and keep the first post updated with the current ruleset... no one is killed or lynched like in mafia and has to sit out... brings out creativity and debate in people.

Cons: requires activity from all players, which really shouldn't be a con, but it is on Runevillage. :? Would, unless someone got lucky (or I use a "loophole" my friend used on me to win quickly), last quite a long time.

I concur. We must lynch him now for the sake of the metagame, we MUST teach people that they can't go around claiming "anniversary" and expect leniency. Topsummoner.

Oh here's the formula:

n = [[(x-291)(y/z)]]

Where x is the number of the proposal, y is the votes in favor of the proposal, and z is the total number of players.

[[ ]] is the integer function which basically shaves off any decimal points a player might receive.

We could set a two week rule as one of the rules at the start; I see no reason why we can't simplify it to begin with. The wording is a little strange in there, anyway. And if activity from a user isn't consistent, we could always have them booted. It's not like mafia where it requires a replacement, afterall.

And, you ninja'd me with the equation. Thanks for that, because if it's not statistics, I don't understand it.

Do you want to get a signup going then or do you not care you makes it? It's also not like mafia in that you don't need a whole lot of players for a good game (~10).

I'll have one up tomorrow night, with an initial set of rules that doesn't sound as sophisticated.

Yeah, I'm still in. Having read the rules, though, this is gonna be...fairly difficult to play on RuneVillage. We can do it, but it'd probably require more activity than mafia games. :P You also have to be prepared to take lots of notes so that if we repeal a rule we can go back to the original one exactly as it was worded.
That page wrote:
A single player should probably be assigned the responsibility of entering and editing the text. Computers will permit very complex, long-term games to develop. Players may want to plan ahead when they start such a game, attempt to date each amendment and addition, and provide separate files for amended and repealed rules, and defeated proposals, in order to keep a record of the game.
And...

I think there are a lot of subtleties in how the rules are laid out, and personally I think we should keep the Initial Set as it's given. If we want to make it less sophisticated, we'll do that in the course of the game! :D

Bit confused, but in. I'm sure with a bit of actual playing I'll understand it better.

If there's not room to give everyone who wants in a spot, you can remove me from the list. I'll probably end up busy with final exams while this is going on, and wouldn't want my own inactivity to drag it down.

I agree with Jaron; keep the given ruleset. Have it posted on the first/second post at all times.
