Oppression

The Sun beats down on my neck, relentless, burning
Sweat dripping off me, my body screams in pain
I raise my pick, the rhythm is hypnotic
Where am I? How did I get here? Who am I?
I am not alone, I know my place
Rags for clothes, scruffy, just how they want us
This is not justice, I am innocent
I am a free man inside, which keeps me going
Nineteen years I am told, how long has it really been
The seasons merge into one, it is always hot

The sound of metal on rock clangs through me
The hairs on my neck prickle as I hear the jeep
I pick up speed; I don’t want to be punished
They come in pairs; they force me to my knees
I feel the searing pain of metal into my sunburned back
And then there is nothing, it is all dark

I wake up on a cold floor, the lights invade my eyes
My head throbs where I was struck, I look around
A concrete cell, 6 by 6
A guard outside, he sees me and yells out
What did I do? Why did they come for me?
Surely that was the question on the lips of every man before me
I am a number to them
They have quotas
I am sure to die here, I think of my family
I hope they are still alive
I hear a scream from the cell next to mine, then a single shot
The scream is gone, but footsteps draw nearer
I am forced to my feet, this is it

And the wind whistles in the sky, I am free from the pain, from the oppression, this is true freedom, I am in control
