Jack Part 3 - September

It was only when the group finally reached the great, ornate gates of the city of Taverly that Dr Henry realized where he was. Lying less than a one-acre walk away over clear ground was the home of his Uncle Doric, master sword smith of Falador and its surrounding lands. With great excitement in his voice he exclaimed ‘Gamestar, you simply must visit uncle Doric with that sword of yours.’ Gamestar looked puzzled and replied ‘Why would I want to do that?’ Henry laughed as he proudly spoke of his Uncle’s role as master sword smith and how he would be bestowing a great honor on the league of the dwarven people by showing him his sword. Goten joined the conversation looking at Henry and said ‘Henry we have but a short amount of time to reach our destination, why should we take a break and visit a relative of yours just to show him an old sword?’ A rush of blood went to Dr Henry’s face as his excitement turned to anger. ‘I want to go and visit my uncle, he has a great knowledge of the lands around where we travel and I would appreciate it if you did not insult me or my family ever again or you will regret it.’ Jack could see the look on Goten’s face read of a man about to ask why not, but before he had the chance Jack spoke out ‘Goten, we have time and if Henry wants to make this visit then we shall make this visit.’

The group took less than half an hour to reach Doric’s small house and workshop on the outskirts of the Goblin village. It was a place that most of the group had visited before on numerous quests and journeys, however this was the first time anyone bar Henry had paid an interest to the house. Without paying much attention to the doorway, but rather the house as a whole the group followed Henry in. ‘Ouch!’ shouted Jack as he smashed face first into the frame of the doorway. ‘You should have ducked,’ said Doric continuing ‘What honor is this that my nephew visits unannounced, do you bring news?’ Henry replied ‘No news, I have something to show you uncle, something I knew you would appreciate.’ Doric looked around the room and Dr Henry spoke up again hurriedly ‘oh I almost forget, Uncle please meet my friends, Goten a brave warrior from the town of Varrock, Jack a good friend and a companion on these long journeys.’ Doric looked to the third man who was dressed in ornate battle Armour ‘and who might you be son?’ Gamestar stepped forward and bowed, not really knowing how else to introduce himself to an elder dwarf ‘I am Gamestar the noble protector of the barbarian village, I accompany these fellows on a journey to the guild of Hero’s.’ Doric’s nodded as his eyes fell upon the sword at Gamester’s side.

‘What is that sword?’ asked Doric with a similar excitement of his Nephew. ‘It is a dwarven made Steel blade with Runeite core, a sword which represents my role amongst my people.’ Gamestar removed the sword from its sheath and handed it to the Dwarf. ‘This is some sword,’ smiled Doric, ‘some sword indeed, you rarely see one of such quality, perfectly balanced and with magical properties when held in the hands of its correct master, you are very lucky to have a sword such as this.’ Gamestar took the sword back and replied ‘Thank you, it has been passed down by many generations of our people.’ At this point Goten and Jack looked at each other, Goten turned to Doric and said ‘Dr Henry tells us that you are a master sword smith yourself.’ Doric looked to the tall human and replied ‘well I smith swords bu...’ Dr Henry jumped in and exclaimed ‘don’t be so modest uncle you have earned your role, if it wasn’t for your sword-making abilities then the two handed sword would never have been invented.’ Goten suddenly had a much greater interest in the old dwarf and asked ‘We are on a journey on which we face many perils, or weaponry is to be honest more on the side of average than amazing, is there anything you can do to increase their powers?’ Henry scowled at Goten’s attempt to gain something for himself out of his family, but before he could speak Doric turned to a doorway and gestured the group into an adjoining room.

The workshop was almost the same size as the main house and the wall was adorned with many different weapons, from long metal javelins with ruby encrusted handles, to a battle mace fit for a king which was made of pure dwarven gold. Doric walked around the men (and his nephew) sizing them and their weaponry up. Doric first turned to Goten, handing him from the wall a longsword made of a metal he did not recognize. ‘That sword is made from finest Runeite ore, so rather than having that industrial green/blue color to it from less experienced smiths, this sword is the slate green that true Runeite looks like. ‘Thank you,’ said a stunned Goten. Next came the turn of Dr Henry, whom received a dagger with the poison of the Kalphite Queen within the smelted Mithril dagger. When the Dwarf offered Gamestar his golden battle mace the young Barbarian refused and exclaimed ‘Your people have bestowed upon me the greatest weapon in our lands, I cannot accept anything else for greed is not the trait of a true leader.’ Finally reaching Jack the Dwarf looked all around his workshop and yet remained empty handed. Jack spoke to the dwarf and said ‘I do not expect anything, I am the least deserving of the group and I am also the least able warrior.’ Doric opened a small wooden chest and removed a small talisman on a steel chain. The talisman was made of emeralds and gold. ‘This talisman will bring you luck in battle, you need ever question your skill as you are a worthy warrior who lacks confidence, go forth and seek your goals.’ Jack nodded and said his thanks to the Dwarf.

Suitably kitted out the group said their thanks to the generous dwarf and left behind the small house, re-entering the lands that would lead them to Taverly. The sun was low in the sky, night only a few hours away. The group entered the druid city before looking for a tavern in which to stay. Unfortunately they could not find a tavern since the city was the home of druids, masters of potions and herbs and yet the worst beer-makers and brewers in the whole of Runescape. ‘Looks like a night under the stars,’ said Jack. ‘Yes, but it’s a fine night tonight so as long as the weather doesn’t turn on us then a night under the stars will do us well,’ Replied Goten. The group didn’t take long to find a nice spot by a river to start a small fire, cook some food and share some stories before the sky turned black and stories turned to dreams.
