Insomnia

4:53 Am
Only three minutes had passed since I last checked the clock, but it seemed like a lifetime. I looked around the room for what seemed like the hundredth time. Nothing had changed. My eyes felt heavy and my body weak, stuck in a waken state. For over a week now every night had seen the same routine of laying in bed, unable to get more than an hour in the land of nod. What a vicious circle I was suffering, immense pressures in the day made worse by my lack of sleep, and nights of constant dread and fear of the same pressures. Nobody said life was easy, but this was torture. There was no escape. The cold, black night punctured every part of my body, robbing me of my ability to feel. The walls closed in more and more as my body remained trapped, frozen, unable to remove itself from this living hell.

4:58 Am
This is Hell! Hell I say! Why am I going through this? I want to raise from this coffin and scream but my lungs and voice are paralyzed by the fatigue that engulfs me. I squeeze my eyes shut tight, I turn back and forth and forth and back. A bead of sweat runs from my brow, my throat spasms as I fight back the urge to vomit. No matter how hard I close my eyes I can still see light, burning through my eyelids. I force a pillow over my face, I suck in air until I choke but to no avail. This is a living nightmare.

6:30 Am
My alarm goes off. I don't know why I even bothered setting it. It's not like I was asleep. I get out of the hellhole that is my room, stand in the bathroom and look in the mirror. Staring back at me is the shell of what used to be a man. Lifeless gray skin hangs in dark bags around deep red bloodshot eyes. It may have only have been a short period of time, but it has aged me to an extent I didn't know possible. I am a broken man.
