Interview with Meepster
about Administrating
Why do you not post often?
I take pride in the quality of my writing, so I selectively choose topics to
post on. I'm not willing to simply post such atrocities as, "lol thats great,"
as that would be an insult to the reader.
Thus, I only post when I honestly feel I can add something to a discussion.
As a general rule, if I spend less than half an hour on a single piece of writing,
it's not worth posting.
Do you enjoy modding?
Yes, I do. It's a challenge at times, as I have to make the right decision all
the time -- you can't make mistakes. Also, I get a lot of abuse as an Administrator;
I recieve 15-20 PMs per day, and a good portion of them are people cursing at
me for doing my job.
So there's a lot of disrespect, and even more stress... But I do enjoy my job.
I feel as if I can make a difference to RuneVillage, and I see the fruitition
of my work every day.
Do you enjoy being an admin better than a mod?
Being an Administrator is definately better than being a Moderator. I really
feel as if I can help more people, as I have the authority to take care of even
more dirty work. Also, the mere title of Administrators adds an aura of respect;
I don't wish it to be so, but people consider my word to be final. I'm wrong
sometimes, mind you, so it's good to have people question my judgement.
Is being an admin less of a challenge than you originally thought it would
be?
It's more of a challenge, definately. My responsibility has certainly quadrupled,
and the work load has suffered a similar Fate. Just answering the 15-20 PMs
per day is draining enough; then I have to deal with requests to the Administration
(signature removal, etc).
I'm just very lucky to have so many competent and friendly Administrators to
work with... I don't know what I'd do without them.
Was it a shock when you were made an admin? Why or why not?
Well, it wasn't really a shock. It was basically Fate Destined for my becoming
an Administrator. People place an amazing amount of trust in my decisions, and
with MeepBot and the new Chat... Fate Destined is appropiate.
Do you do anything on the computer that doesn't involve Runevillage?
Yeah, I do a lot of things that aren't RuneVillage related. I'm slowly creating
a MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) called Korenai,
which quite a few Villagers are actively participating in... Also, I have a
lot of side projects that I work on. Most of my computer work is either coding
or talking to people.
Outside of the computer -- and yes, contrary to popular belief, I do have a
life -- I'm an artist of many medias. I'm a photographer
And yes, those two links are indeed shameless plug-ins for my non-RuneVillage
work.
How long do you spend on Runevillage or doing something for Runevillage on
average each day?
Well, on weekdays I usually spend 2-5 hours on RuneVillage. I get home, spend
some time answering e-mails and PMs, do the obligatory Administrative duties,
and then I relax in the RuneVillage Chat.
The biggest part of being an Administrator is expecting the unexpected; you
have to be there when that spam attack hits. So I just randomly browse forums,
read topics, shuffle spam and flaming out of the public view...
A lot of people want to be mods. What is your advice on becoming one?
Well, to the people who want to become Moderators, I say this: Don't, if you
want to keep your sanity. It's a horrible job at times; no pay, people flaming
you for doing your job -- I've been driven to tears too many times because of
this website. The only benefits are a bit of recognition, a few buttons, and
an e-mail address.
Why don't I leave, then?
Because it's an amazing website... People think RuneVillage is just a RuneScape
fan site -- and if that's what you believe, then that's your perception -- but
there's so much more to it. RuneVillage is an amazing website, with a lot of
wonderful people that have really changed my life for the better. I'll never
forget this place...
But, if you're willing to put up with all of this... It's really not that hard
to become a Moderator; you just have to demonstrate a dedication and love of
this website that is quite unparalleled. Be active, post intelligently, put
some thought into your work; I notice people like that.
