Just got back from a week long journey in the states, visited some friends in Baltimore first then ended up in Vegas for a ffxiv convention with one of our other RVers, it was very different to the UK!

Las vegas was so completely overwhelming, everything is so big and bright and busy! I visited the grand canyon whilst I was there and that was truly amazing to see, almost rivals our sights here ;) There was sooooo much food and the lady calling cards were an...experience to say the least! I tried lots of different food, the only things I could truly not stomach were tentacles off some squid at a sushi place, it was hard to force them down without vomiting :P Mac and cheese is nice though!

-Its super confusing when the price displayed is not the price you pay, you gotta fix that.
-All your water tastes and smells of chlorine
-Everyone is super enthusiastic about everything, especially tour guides/drink servers
-All your desserts are terrible, especially if they contained chocolate
    -I like tacos!
-You can get super dehydrated in vegas super quick and not even realise, 6 glasses of water later and I felt much better :P
-America scans your fingerprints, I can now commit no crimes D:
-you can sleep anywhere if you're tired enough
-WTF is the deal with cornbread, its like...dessert you eat with your main? I don't understand!

  • -Businesses have found that it increases sales when people see it without tax included. Also not everyone has to pay the sales tax.
  • -it's to hide the taste of rust and sewage
  • -That just feels standard here. I'm surprised to hear someone mention it.
  • -You are mistaken. That being said you get to experience German chocolate as a near standard in the UK so I'm sure we pale in comparison.
  • -You hate yourself.
  • -That's probably your acclimatization from the UK. It's weird how much our bodies shut down in foreign areas.
  • -Your fingerprints have probably been lost or misfiled by our outstanding security agencies.
  • -Not true. Is true. Encouraged yet sometimes illegal.
  • -No one understands corn bread. It's some weird device the south created to dry out your mouth and stick in your throat so that you would need to order another drink I'm sure. With free refills we should just phase the damn substance out.

I wish I could go to these fanfests.

Servers in most of the United States have tips counted as part of their wages and tend to get fired if they don't do everything they can to spare their employers actually having to pay them.

So how was Baltimore?

It's a shithole. I live here.

But yeah, how WAS Baltimore?

Weird that you went to the FanFest for FF14, I still play almost daily and would have loved to go. I thought about buying the live stream just for the free stuff.

Glad you had fun!

Glad you liked your trip! Vegas can definitely be overwhelming at first glance, however, outside of The Strip, there is an amazing city with normal buildings and people. I'll be moving to Vegas in April of next year. I'm pretty excited to do so. I've never been to Baltimore, though.

- Yeah. Sales tax sucks mainly because it's a different rate in every state...
- That is definitely regional. Even from city to city in the same region. The city I grew up in had amazing water and now I'm back living there. In between I lived in a city that had the worst water. It absolutely tasted like chemical. :/
- It's their job!
- Yeah. I'm not a fan of ours at all. Even the cake I like best (Tres Leches) was invented in Mexico...hahaha
- Also from Mexico, but I'm so glad we caught on. Tacos are the best! I eat tacos every single week of my life. Sometimes twice a week. God Save The Taco.
- This is my experience. It's bizarre, because in North-West Indiana, where I reside, the humidity is waaaayyyy up there in the Summer. When it's 80, it feels like 110. In Vegas, it can actually be 110, and only feel like 80 to me, because the humidity is so low. With that comes me getting sunburned and dehydrated, because I just don't feel hot.
- If you are convicted of a felony, they take your DNA, too!
- Yes, and in some places you can get arrested or ticketed for doing so.
- Cornbread has to be slathered in butter, and served with something really salty to be good, IMO...preferably something wet, like a soup, or beans and such. Otherwise, it's dry and unpleasant. Upon further thought, I could do cornbread alone with a glass of milk to wash it down.

Water taste (and sales tax) are both absolutely regional.

...Also I think that's the first time I've ever heard someone call cornbread a dessert. It's like a side item, like a biscuit or a potato.

Has nobody here ever had good cornbread? Come on man...

And the Strip is a lot nicer than New Vegas led me to believe.

Heh, I was actually there in August. Your road systems are terrible and your beer is worse!

the cornbread tasted like a cupcake without the icing on top, it was really weird to be a main part of a meal.

The roads here actually aren't bad comparably, I was born and raised in Michigan and the weather absolutely destroys the roads. Do you mean the quality of the tarmac itself or the network? Must be a city thing. But yeah, the further south you go the better the roads.

Where did you go for beer and what did you get? Baltimore is like any other city. If you go to Applebee's and order a Miller Lite, that's what you'll get. If someone who knows the area can show you around, there are some excellent beers here depending on your taste.

I was alluding to the how a good 90% of the local brews you can find in Maryland seem to be pale ales, and the fact that the entire DC area seems to have a fear of grids. It's like trying to drive through Boston, only every hour is rush hour.
