Hey everyone!

If you were browsing the forums today, you probably noticed some pretty interesting stuff going on! If you missed the fun, here's what happened.

Some nice fellow by the name of David decided to hack Burks' account, one of our former administrators. I had kept Burks and Glodenox as admins out of respect for their past work for RV, but neither of them have been around for a while. Under the guise of Burks, David made several posts, globals, and 2 mass PMs with a phishing link designed to steal RuneScape accounts. If you clicked his link, you'll definitely want to scan your computer, and probably update your RS password and add a Bank PIN, etc. Milo followed it up with a mass PM of his own saying that it was a scam, so hopefully that reached enough people to prevent any damage. Apologies for my own delay in dealing with the situation; I was actually attending classes in San Francisco all day, so I wasn't available at the time.

Anyway, in order to make sure he couldn't be stopped, David (who replaced Burks' e-mail with his own personal e-mail address (David is probably not very bright)) immediately issued 800 IP bans for the reason "scum" and outright deleted the accounts of most of the other moderators and administrators. This, of course, meant that between me, Jackstick, Sighence, and Pyro3000 just to name a few, 60,000+ posts were gone forever. He totally ruined RuneVillage's history!

Except that I've been taking monthly backups of RV ever since we changed servers. Like, the last backup was literally just last week. 2009 never happened, but 2014-2016 isn't going anywhere.

Long story short, I nuked the database, replaced it with the backup, and recreated any posts I could find that were made since then. The only things we truly lost were posts made in the last week by users that got deleted (aka mods/admins), smaller things like profile/avatar/signature edits, and four hours where I didn't get to play No Man's Sky.

I also de-admined Burks and Glod (duh) and removed the ability for people to mass PM the entire userbase (why did we even HAVE that lever? I'm told Henner did it.) I also changed Burks' password. Hey Burks! If you see this, get in touch with me to get your account back! Also change your passwords, dude!

I want to give a special thanks to everyone who helped me out today, including Frank, Ventrue, Milo, Pyro, Sparky, Jackstick, Magicana, and Topsummoner. Frank even got a long overdue promotion for his help!

Now you know...the rest of the story. Good day!

I'm not trying to point fingers, but I just think it's interesting that Frank's account didn't get deleted.

Maybe we can use David's email address to discover his home address. And mail him a steamy bag of...

Or! Sign up his email address for a bunch of porn spam.

Anyway. Thanks for fixing everything Jaron

Pyro and Jack's posts on the last few pages of my latest mafia game are among these. If it wasn't for Frank quoting Jack's detective claim, the ending of that game would seem very confusing for any archival readers!

Again, Frank proves himself the MVP of RV and well deserving of the title of Czar. All hail!

I don't know if he saw it before you fixed the problem, but I sent Milo a PM thanking him for the mass PM. So in case you didn't see that, thanks for doing that Milo!

Lol at someone who would feel the need to do this to us at this point. Thanks for the hard work to get us back up Jaron.

Looks like I missed some fun. All I'm missing are some random musings in the Pokemon Go thread I think.

The note about signatures did make me think maybe I should change mine...

Thanks for this post. Ran a virus scan and changed my password. I actually fell for clicking on the link. Didn't get hacked, maybe JAG still working protected me.

:) I haven't received any email notifications from these forums in two years (last one was about hiker's passing), so I was a bit surprised when I got the email notification from Burks' post. Glad to see things are alright on the forum side now. I'm off to my shadows again :)

Shoot, I was hoping those e-mails never went out. I never got one, anyway. Maybe they got sent to users in order (you're #7, I'm #25062) and the server just went "HAHAHA NOPE I GIVE UP" at one point.

I thought about making a throwaway Gmail account to send David a "STOP BEING EVIL" message of some sort, but it's really not worth my time. He's the one stuck in 2005, after all!

Even though I haven't logged in on the forums for a long time, I would've gladly helped out with the issue ;) De-admining me is indeed logical and I have no problem with that (though I would've appreciated a heads-up first, I'm not difficult to get in touch with at all)

David nuked your account as quickly as mine and Jack's; there wasn't much you could have done (though I appreciate the offer!)

And you're right, sorry--I probably should have let you know somehow, but an out-of-the-blue message of "hi glod how ya doin' cool hey listen i'm de-admining you kthxbye" seemed awkward enough. :shifty:

Aw man. First drama in years and I missed it. I'd think the only person that would do something like that is around from time to time. I mean, why bother with this inactive forum? lol
