My friend's brother used one of those "free Xbox 360" coupons that you can find on random threads at 4chan. He posted pictures of the receipt next to the boxed console on his Facebook.

1) He was dumb using his local Wal-Mart to purchase the console.
2) He boasted about it on Facebook.

More or less I don't like his brother, so I decided to leave an anonymous tip to our Wal-Mart. The manager said they will not allow those coupons anymore, but legally they can't go after him, even though I was willing to give his name and any other information they needed.

Any people familiar with legalities know why they can't go after someone who knowingly stole from their store?

*From a past wal-mart employee*

If a coupon works when scanned into the system, then it's good.

Plain and simple, however they send a bill to whichever manufacturer issued the coupon and it's up to them to go after whoever used it.

9 times out of 10 though it goes nowhere because it's hard to actually track out that information.

You left your tip at the wrong place.

I work retail, and so far we don't seem to care about the coupons we accept, "...as long as it scans." However, two outside companies have seemed to care enough to tell us what coupons not to accept. Coca-Cola and Doritos have both had signs posted by the timeclock warning what coupons are ok, how to recognize them, and a message that accepting any fake coupons means our store will not be reimbursed for the costs of products purchased with them.

Coupons aren't actually tickets from stores, they're discounts from the manufacturer (if they are listed as manufacturer coupons). Your friend's brother didn't steal from Walmart, since they probably got the full price of the xbox sent to them. He stole from Microsoft itself, or whichever company was listed on the coupon as having to pay up (I'm not sure how this is determined, only that coupon depots in Texas are responsible for this part).

Not that I'm encouraging you to send a tip to somebody else, but Walmart really didn't lose any money on this deal. Also, I'm not entirely certain Microsoft could go after him, since they probably haven't seen his coupon to determine if it's real or not. All they'd actually have to go on is the ravings of some little :bunny: on facebook and your word.

Is the coupon legit or fake?
I hope whichever action you take, it is not out of spite and envy, but rather concern for the law.

It's a fake coupon. Basically (from what I know) it started from someone making some sort coupon in Photoshop. It can be scanned, and they all look the exact same. The only difference is they'll copy and paste some sort of product in the top left corner and change the words.

Image

This looks very similar to the ones advertised off 4chan. They replace the image with whatever they want for free, change up the words, etc.
I appreciate you clearing that up for me, bluecoat.

As far as I'm aware, these photoshopped 4chan coupons are scanned by the store, then the store requests money back from the manufacturer, to reimburse them for the cost of the item. Most times the manufacturer won't pay, since they didn't actually issue the coupon, and then the stores realize they've been ripped off and will no longer accept the coupons.

That's what happened at a local Target, anyway. A friend did this same thing with Xbox 360 controllers; one worked a few months back, but no longer does.

We're told at GameStop not to take these coupons. I've had a couple people try to make me take them and I generally refuse and kick them out if they keep insisting.

You guys are harsher than Walgreens. We generally don't care, and just politely tell the customer "no" in the instances where the manufacturers make us. I get the feeling I (and likely my poor store manager) would get written up if I ever kicked a customer out and they told corporate. Of course, we don't carry any game stuff other than shovelware.

Actually it's not that easy at all, I work in retail and know for a fact that you can't just use one barcode and copypaste whatever you want. It's much more complicated to make a counterfeit coupon.

The reason these work and will scan at stores is because they setup the barcode using the UPC from the item and then certain numbers added to the barcode that tells the register (Okay I need to take this amount off). That way everytime a vendor comes out with a new coupon, that coupon does not have to be entered into the system and will scan at every store they sell product the day that coupon is released.

Where I work we keep an eye out for counterfeit coupons and likely if you get caught trying to pass something like a free xbox 360 coupon it would be declined and the store detective would be called.

Honestly the guy was at least smart going to wal-mart, it seems like they really don't care. The reason wal-mart won't go after him is it's not even worth their time to do so. So what, they lose a few hundred dollars. Honestly that is just a fraction of what each store probably loses to thefts every month.

I have the guide somewhere, it's quite interesting

Not inclined to use it, but fun to see how easy it is to take advantage of this system

Our store detectives, also known as loss prevention, are the people who walk around the store acting like customers and try to catch people stealing. Just last week I saw a guy get escorted out in handcuffs my the local police because he was trying to steal wii accessories lol.

Saw that a lot when I worked at Sears. Actually got to do it one day when we were overstaffed in the back room and understaffed for loss prevention. Got to hang out and eat pizza with the guys in the TV room too.

I've been seeing a lot more of these fake coupon signs hanging up all over the place now.

Our loss prevention isn't so much aimed at customers as us. We have one guy who works in our district, and basically he mans the security cameras occasionally and shows up at the store to make sure we aren't stealing from the tills. I have never seen him do much of anything, but I have always been told to beware his wrath.

Although I would love to see him lead someone away in handcuffs.
