Keep in mind on that one you really can just sacrifice any follower, if things don't work out for you. You don't really even need to reload a save, just hire someone and have them touch the pillar.

That's the problem, I can't hire anyone. Says I already have someone hired but I have no idea who it was.

And I looked, I don't have an earlier saves other than a few weeks ago, but I had a hired hand well before that.

Ohhhhhh, I didn't know you can't hire more than one person at once! That's so odd...

I had that problem until I decided trying to keep a companion is just a nuisance. All I did was wait it out.

Also, you should note that some companions will return to their previous spots. Maybe in the event that they didn't die, but got separated from you? All of my companions characters returned to the longhouse after I thought they had died off. So check wherever you got your last companion.

Though Lydia does NOT ever return, strangely enough.

Does Shadow-mere ever re-spawn, or is he dead forever to me?

I thought it was about 30 days? It definitely took longer for her to respawn for me.

I believe this is a rhetorical question.

I borrowed this game a week and a half ago.

I'm a level 13 Nord that doesn't know what the hell he's doing. I dual wield daggers, going for that 15.0x sneak damage bonus whenever possible. I use flames, Fireball, frostbite, shock and stuff for magic, and I have a supple Nord ancient bow using ancient Nord arrows.

I get the crap kicked out of me a lot. ._.

Get your smithing up. It'll help you forge good armor when you need it. When you go to get the elder scroll, you can make tons of dwarven ingots from monster drops. This'll help you get quite a few levels.

Well, statistically speaking, slightly more than a giant suckusaur. A dire one.

Yeah I am like 51 Smithing or something. I found some Dwarven Storehouse and raided all the dwarven stuff, and then it took me 5 years to drag it back to my place in Whiterun.

That was a boring walk. ._.

I never Smithed myself any armor. Thieves Guild Equipment all the way!

I made a mage at first but ended up dual-wielding a Daedric Sword of Winter in one hand and a Daedric Sword of the Inferno in the other. Fire+Ice go!

I need to start playing again. I haven't played skyrim for months but currently playing Darksiders (can't believe I didn't buy this sooner!).

Is the DLC any good?
