RuneVillage Birthday Bash IV Literary Contest Winning Entry
by Jaron (2008)

It was just nearly midnight, the last of October,
And All Hallows' Eve was now practically over.
One more celebration had come and had passed;
"It wasn't the first, and it won't be the last!"

Hiker, who said this, stood next to the fire,
His voice full of hope and of longing desire.
He called, "It is here, a new year has begun!
Put no time to waste, let's all start having fun!"

Most of us instantly knew what he meant,
And with a big cheer, 'round the Village we went!
In what seemed an instant—a second at most,
We had a new party; we had a new host.

"It's only November," one Villager said.
"Your calendar's off; you're all two months ahead!"
For he thought the 'new year' mentioned, you see,
Was the common one held in January.

And though a few chuckled, we came to his aid.
"There are prizes to win; there are games to be played!"
Jackstick grinned proudly, "Just take it from me,
With November comes the RVBB!"

Sparing no time, he began to explain,
Taking us all right down Memory Lane.
"RV began over six years ago—
We've grown large since then, as you surely well know."

"Hopefully, not once do we take for granted
This great community Hiker has planted.
We've all made new friends, ones we'd never have met
If RuneVillage had not been built, I would bet."

"So each year, during the month of November,
We set time aside to make sure we remember.
Come on, let's have fun; let the party ensue!
November has come, and there's so much to do!"

Hiker closed the book with both a smirk and a chuckle, apparently reliving some fairly fond memories. The logs in the Village Library's fireplace were blazing brightly, bringing warmth to all who had come to hear the poem's annual reading. "When was that written?" a newer Villager asked, his eyes wide. "Back during the RVBB of 2008," Hiker replied. "It's always amazed me how the Birthday Bash has grown year after year. It's a miracle we can fit everything into one month, let alone keep it organized." He looked around the room a bit before finally getting out of his chair. "Speaking of which, I believe the Costume Contest is about to begin, correct? You don't want to be late!" In a flurry of excitement, the Villagers left the room one by one, heading for day's the next event. Hiker stayed behind, ambling over to the nearest bookcase and putting the poem back on the shelf. "Until next year..."
